Oak Park Heights Summary
Oak Park Heights is a city located in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,269 at the 2010 census. It is located on the St. Croix River, directly across from the city of Stillwater.
History
The area that is now Oak Park Heights was first settled in the early 1800s by French-Canadian fur traders. The first permanent settlers arrived in the 1850s, and the area was incorporated as a village in 1858. The village was named after the oak trees that grew in the area.
In the late 1800s, the area became a popular summer resort destination for wealthy families from the Twin Cities. The area was known for its beautiful scenery and its proximity to the St. Croix River.
In the early 1900s, the village was annexed by the city of Stillwater. In the 1950s, the area was re-incorporated as the city of Oak Park Heights.
Geography
Oak Park Heights is located at 45°2′45″N 92°51′17″W (45.04583, -92.85472). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Oak Park Heights is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a plastics factory.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,269 people, 2,093 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 2,213 housing units at an average density of 539.2 per square mile (208.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $71,944. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
