Nerstrand Summary

Nerstrand is a small city located in Rice County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated along the Cannon River, approximately 25 miles south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Nerstrand was founded in 1856 by Norwegian immigrants. The town was named after the Norwegian town of Nærstrand, which means “near the shore”. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major producer of wheat and other grains. The town also had a thriving lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.
