History
Mountain Iron was founded in 1892 by the Merritt brothers, who were looking for iron ore. The city was named after the nearby Mountain Iron Mine, which was the first mine to be opened in the area. The city was incorporated in 1907.
The city was the site of the first iron ore shipment from the Iron Range in 1892. The ore was shipped to Duluth, Minnesota, and then to Cleveland, Ohio, where it was used to make steel.
