Moose Lake is a city located in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Duluth, Minnesota-Superior, Wisconsin metropolitan area.

History

The area around Moose Lake was first settled in the late 1800s. The city was named after Moosehead Lake, which is located nearby. The city was incorporated in 1891.
In 1918, Moose Lake was the site of a major forest fire that destroyed much of the city. The fire was started by sparks from a passing train and quickly spread due to the dry conditions. The fire destroyed over 500 homes and businesses and killed 45 people.

Geography

Moose Lake is located at 46°25′N 92°48′W (46.4133, -92.8003). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Moose Lake is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The city also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,751 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 668.2 people per square mile (258.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 289.2 per square mile (111.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
