Melrose Summary

Melrose, Minnesota is a small city located in Stearns County, in the central part of the state. It is situated on the Sauk River, about 25 miles northwest of St. Cloud. The city has a population of approximately 3,000 people, and is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Melrose was first settled in 1856 by German immigrants. The city was originally known as “New Munich”, and was later renamed Melrose in 1872. The name was chosen in honor of Melrose Abbey, a famous monastery in Scotland.
The city was incorporated in 1887, and the first mayor was John Schmoll. The city quickly grew, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural and commercial center.
