Loretto Summary
Loretto is a small city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The city is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 25 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Loretto was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally called “Loretto” after the nearby Loretto Abbey, a Catholic convent founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Loretto was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a cheese factory. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the Twin Cities.
In the 1950s, Loretto began to experience a population decline as many of its residents moved to the Twin Cities for better job opportunities. The town’s population dropped from 1,845 in 1950 to 1,541 in 1960.

Loretto is located at 45°14′N 93°37′W (45.23, -93.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Loretto’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a beef farm, and a vegetable farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 595.2 per square mile (229.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,000. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
