History

Long Prairie was first settled in 1856 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was named after the nearby Long Prairie River. The first post office was established in 1858. The town was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Long Prairie is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 71 and Minnesota State Highway 27. It is situated on the banks of the Long Prairie River. The city is located in the Central Lakes region of Minnesota.

The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,323 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
