Lakefield Summary

Lakefield, Minnesota is a small city located in Jackson County, in the southwestern corner of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a population of 1,845, according to the 2010 census, and is the county seat of Jackson County.

History

The area that is now Lakefield was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally called “New Germany”, and was later renamed Lakefield in 1887. The name was chosen to reflect the nearby lake, which was named after the nearby Des Moines River.
The city was officially incorporated in 1891, and the first mayor was elected in 1892. The city quickly grew, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural and commercial center.
