History
The area that is now Lafayette was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The city was originally named “New Germany”, but was later changed to Lafayette in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military leader who fought alongside the American colonists during the Revolutionary War.
In 1856, the first post office was established in Lafayette. The city was officially incorporated in 1872.
