Lafayette Summary

Lafayette is a small city located in Sibley County, Minnesota, United States. The city is situated on the Minnesota River, approximately 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis. As of the 2010 census, the population of Lafayette was 1,072.

History

The area that is now Lafayette was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The city was originally named “New Germany”, but was later changed to Lafayette in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military leader who fought alongside the American colonists during the Revolutionary War.
In 1856, the first post office was established in Lafayette. The city was officially incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Lafayette is located at 44°45'N 94°17'W (44.75, -94.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.
The city is situated on the Minnesota River, approximately 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.

Economy

The economy of Lafayette is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, including dairy, beef, and hog farms. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the city.
The city is also home to a number of small retail stores, including a grocery store, hardware store, and several restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Lafayette was 1,072. The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $50,000. The per capita income for the city was $20,000. About 8.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
