Ironton Summary

Ironton is a small city located in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles south of Duluth. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Ironton was founded in 1883 by the Duluth and Iron Range Railway. The city was named after the nearby Iron Range, which was a major source of iron ore for the steel industry. The city was incorporated in 1887.
The city was a major hub for the iron ore industry, and the city's economy was largely dependent on the iron ore industry. The city was also home to several large steel mills, which provided employment for many of the city's residents.
In the early 20th century, Ironton was a major center for the logging industry. The city was home to several large sawmills, which provided employment for many of the city's residents.

Geography

Ironton is located at 46°45'17" North, 92°17'45" West (46.754722, -92.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles south of Duluth. The city is surrounded by the St. Louis River to the east, and the Cloquet River to the west.
