Hopkins Summary

Hopkins, Minnesota is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 17,591 at the 2010 census. It is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, located 8 miles (13 km) southwest of the city's downtown.

History

Hopkins was founded in 1887 by settlers from New England. The city was named after Edward Hopkins, a prominent local businessman. Hopkins was incorporated as a village in 1893 and as a city in 1928.

Geography

Hopkins is located at 44°55′N 93°20′W (44.914, -93.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hopkins is home to several large employers, including General Mills, Cargill, and UnitedHealth Group. The city also has a vibrant small business community, with many locally owned restaurants, shops, and services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,591 people, 7,717 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,179.2 people per square mile (1,609.7/km2). There were 8,093 housing units at an average density of 1,937.2 per square mile (746.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 6.7% Asian, 2.7% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 7,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,945 for females.
