History
Hokah was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Norway. The city was named after the Norwegian town of Høkå, which means “high hill” in Norwegian. The city was incorporated in 1876.
The first post office in Hokah was established in 1857. The first school was built in 1858. The first church was built in 1859.

The economy of Hokah is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, including dairy, beef, and hog farms.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
