Graceville Summary

Graceville is a small city located in Big Stone County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated along the Minnesota-South Dakota border, approximately 20 miles east of the city of Ortonville. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Graceville was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Ortonville. The town was named after Grace, the daughter of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Graceville was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a lumber yard, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a school, a church, and a hotel.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. In the 1970s, the town was revitalized with the construction of a new school and the opening of a new grocery store.
