Freeborn Summary

Freeborn, Minnesota is a small city located in Freeborn County in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Shell Rock River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is the county seat of Freeborn County.

History

The area that is now Freeborn was first settled in 1854 by a group of Swedish immigrants. The settlers named the area Freeborn after the Swedish word for freedom. The city was officially incorporated in 1858, and the first post office was established in 1859.
In the late 19th century, Freeborn was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, and a flour mill. The city also had a thriving lumber industry, and was home to several sawmills.
In the early 20th century, Freeborn began to experience a decline in its agricultural and lumber industries. The city was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of its businesses closed. However, the city was able to rebound in the 1940s and 1950s, thanks to the growth of the local manufacturing industry.
