Fosston Summary
Fosston is a city located in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks-ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Fosston was founded in 1882 by Norwegian immigrants. The city was named after Fosston, Norway, the hometown of the first settlers. The first settlers were Ole and Ingeborg Johnson, who arrived in 1882. They were soon followed by other Norwegian immigrants, who established a small farming community.
The first post office was established in 1883, and the first school was built in 1884. The first church was built in 1885, and the first newspaper was established in 1886.
The city was incorporated in 1887, and the first mayor was elected in 1888. The first bank was established in 1889, and the first telephone service was established in 1890.

Fosston's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a grain elevator, a feed mill, and a dairy.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication company.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 575.8 per square mile (222.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945.
