History

Fosston was founded in 1882 by Norwegian immigrants. The city was named after Fosston, Norway, the hometown of the first settlers. The first settlers were Ole and Ingeborg Johnson, who arrived in 1882. They were soon followed by other Norwegian immigrants, who established a small farming community.
The first post office was established in 1883, and the first school was built in 1884. The first church was built in 1885, and the first newspaper was established in 1886.
The city was incorporated in 1887, and the first mayor was elected in 1888. The first bank was established in 1889, and the first telephone service was established in 1890.
