The area that is now Finlayson was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of Swedish immigrants. The town was originally known as “Finlayson’s Corner”, named after the first settler, John Finlayson. The town was officially incorporated in 1891, and the name was changed to Finlayson.

In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the logging industry moved away from the area. The population dropped from over 1,000 in 1950 to just over 500 in 1970.
