Fertile was founded in 1881 by settlers from Norway and Sweden. The city was named after the fertile soil in the area. The first post office was established in 1882, and the city was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Fertile was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to a number of businesses, including a creamery, a flour mill, a lumber yard, and a brickyard. The city also had a number of churches, including a Lutheran church, a Methodist church, and a Catholic church.
In the 1950s, Fertile began to experience a decline in population as people moved away from rural areas to larger cities. The city’s population dropped from 1,845 in 1950 to 1,541 in 2010.
