History

The area that is now Dodge Center was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally called "Dodgeville" after its founder, William Dodge. The town was later renamed "Dodge Center" in 1856.
In 1857, the first post office was established in Dodge Center. The first school was built in 1858 and the first church was built in 1859.
In 1867, the first newspaper, the Dodge County Herald, was established in Dodge Center. The first bank was established in 1871.
In 1872, the first railroad line was built through Dodge Center. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.

The economy of Dodge Center is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including the Dodge County Co-op, which is the largest agricultural cooperative in the state of Minnesota.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Dodge Center Manufacturing Company, which produces a variety of products, including farm equipment, automotive parts, and industrial machinery.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,769 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 725 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
