Deerwood Summary

Deerwood is a small city located in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. It is situated on the south shore of Gull Lake, and is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 1,072 as of the 2010 census, and is the smallest incorporated city in the county.

History

Deerwood was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The city was originally known as Gull Lake Station, and was a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was officially incorporated in 1906, and the name was changed to Deerwood in 1907. The name was chosen to reflect the abundance of deer in the area.

Geography

Deerwood is located at 46°25'N 94°14'W (46.4167, -94.2333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Deerwood is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The city also has a small industrial park, which is home to a few small manufacturing companies.
