Deer River Summary

Deer River is a city located in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Itasca County.

History

The area that is now Deer River was first settled in the late 1800s. The first settlers were mostly of Scandinavian descent, and the area was known as "Scandinavia". The first post office was established in 1887, and the town was officially incorporated in 1901.
The city was named after the nearby Deer River, which was named by French explorers in the late 1700s. The river was named for the abundance of deer in the area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Deer River is a small city with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are tourism, forestry, and agriculture. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
The city is also home to a large paper mill, which is the largest employer in the area. The mill produces paper products for the local and regional markets.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,945 people, 817 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 876.4 people per square mile (338.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 400.9 per square mile (154.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
