Ceylon Summary

Ceylon is a small city located in Martin County, Minnesota. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, approximately 10 miles south of Fairmont. The city has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Mankato-North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Ceylon was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Ceylon, Iowa. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the potential for farming. The town was originally named Ceylon City, but the name was changed to Ceylon in 1876.
The city was incorporated in 1887 and the first mayor was elected in 1888. The city was named after the Ceylon tea plant, which was grown in the area.
The city experienced rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due to the construction of the railroad and the development of the local lumber industry. The city was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.
