Brownsville Summary

Brownsville, Minnesota is a small city located in Freeborn County in the southeastern part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, and is part of the Albert Lea metropolitan area. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census, and is the county seat of Freeborn County.

History

The area that is now Brownsville was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as Cedar Mills, and was located on the Cedar River. In 1856, the settlement was renamed Brownsville after the first settler, William Brown. The town was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Brownsville was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a creamery, and a cheese factory. The town also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.
