History

The city of Belgrade, Minnesota is located in Stearns County, in the central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Sauk River, and is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1856 by German immigrants, and was originally known as Sauk Centre. The name was changed to Belgrade in 1872, after the capital of Serbia.
The city was an important stop on the Great Northern Railway, and was a major hub for the lumber industry. The city was also home to a number of other industries, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a brickyard.
