History

Baxter was founded in 1881 by William Baxter, a lumberman from Wisconsin. The city was named after him. The first settlers arrived in 1882 and the city was incorporated in 1901.
The city was originally a logging town, and the lumber industry was the main source of employment for many years. In the early 1900s, the city was home to several sawmills, a planing mill, and a shingle mill. The city also had a brickyard and a creamery.
