Zaleski Summary

Zaleski is a village located in Vinton County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Sunday Creek, a tributary of the Hocking River. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Zaleski was first settled in 1802 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as Sunday Creek, but was later renamed Zaleski in honor of Count Alexander Zaleski, a Polish nobleman who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
The village was incorporated in 1876 and was home to a variety of industries, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a woolen mill, and a brickyard. The village also had a post office, a bank, and a hotel.

Geography

Zaleski is located at 39°20'25" North, 82°25'17" West (39.340278, -82.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Zaleski is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a public library and a post office.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 810.0 per square mile (312.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,000.
