History
Willshire was founded in 1837 by William Willshire, a settler from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as Willshire Station, as it was a stop on the Cincinnati, Wabash and Michigan Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1875.
Economy
Willshire is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 709.2 per square mile (272.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945.
