West Lafayette Summary

West Lafayette is a village located in Coshocton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Coshocton County.

History

West Lafayette was founded in 1810 by William Beall, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Beallsville, but was later renamed West Lafayette in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, who had visited the area in 1825.
The village was incorporated in 1837 and became the county seat of Coshocton County in 1846. The village was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
