Wapakoneta Summary
Wapakoneta is a city located in Auglaize County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Auglaize County and is located along the Auglaize River. The population was 9,867 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Wapakoneta was first settled in 1832 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was originally called "Newbury" and was later renamed "Wapakoneta" after a local Native American chief. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Wapakoneta became a major center for the production of agricultural products, including wheat, corn, and oats. The town also became a major hub for the transportation of goods, with the Wabash Railroad running through the town.
In the early 20th century, Wapakoneta became a major center for the production of glass products. The Owens-Illinois Glass Company opened a plant in the town in 1915, and the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company opened a plant in the town in 1929.
In 1969, Wapakoneta was the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong's childhood home is now a museum, and the town celebrates its connection to Armstrong with an annual festival.

Wapakoneta is located at 40°32'25" North, 84°13'45" West (40.540278, -84.229167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Wapakoneta's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company, and the Wapakoneta Foundry. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including the Wapakoneta Grain Company and the Wapakoneta Dairy.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 9,867 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,902.3 people per square mile (734.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 793.2 per square mile (306.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
