Wakeman was founded in 1817 by John Wakeman, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Wakeman's Corners, and was later shortened to Wakeman. The village was incorporated in 1867.

The economy of Wakeman is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,541 people, 602 households, and 431 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,269.2 people per square mile (490.2/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (205.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.58% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 602 households, out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
