History
Vandalia was founded in 1841 by settlers from the nearby city of Dayton. The city was named after the ancient kingdom of Vandalia, which was located in what is now Germany. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Vandalia was a major stop on the Dayton and Michigan Railroad, which connected Dayton to Michigan. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the city, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
In the early 20th century, Vandalia was a major center for the production of automobiles. The city was home to the Vandalia Motor Car Company, which produced cars from 1910 to 1915.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
