Urbana Summary
Urbana, Ohio is a city located in Champaign County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,793 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Champaign County. The city is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Urbana was founded in 1805 by William Ward, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after the Italian city of Urbino, which was the birthplace of Pope Urban VIII. The city was incorporated in 1833.
In the early 19th century, Urbana was a center of industry, with several mills and factories located in the city. The city was also home to several educational institutions, including the Urbana University, which was founded in 1850.
Geography
Urbana is located at 40°7′25″N 83°45′17″W (40.123611, -83.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.90 square miles (15.27 km2), of which 5.89 square miles (15.24 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
Economy
Urbana is home to several businesses and industries, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Urbana University, which is a private liberal arts college.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,793 people, 4,717 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,999.3 people per square mile (772.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 860.3 per square mile (332.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $32,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
