Tallmadge Summary

Tallmadge, Ohio is a city located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Akron and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 17,537 at the 2010 census.

History

Tallmadge was founded in 1807 by Colonel John Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as "Tallmadge Township" and was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The town was incorporated in 1808 and was named after Colonel Tallmadge.
Tallmadge was a farming community until the late 19th century when it began to develop into a residential suburb of Akron. The town was home to several factories, including the Akron Tire and Rubber Company, which was founded in 1891. The company was later renamed the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

Geography

Tallmadge is located at 41°7′25″N 81°25′17″W (41.123611, -81.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Tallmadge is home to several businesses and industries, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is home to the headquarters of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which is one of the largest employers in the area. Other major employers include the Akron General Medical Center, the Akron Children's Hospital, and the Akron Zoo.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,537 people, 6,945 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,164.3 people per square mile (834.2/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 930.3 per square mile (359.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
