Stow Summary

Stow is a city located in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Akron and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 34,837 at the 2010 census.

History

Stow was first settled in 1809 by John Stow, a Revolutionary War veteran. The area was originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Stow was incorporated as a village in 1868 and as a city in 1961.

Geography

Stow is located at 41°13′N 81°22′W (41.2179, -81.3645). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.7 square miles (43.3 km2), of which 16.6 square miles (43.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Stow is home to several large employers, including the Kent State University Stow-Kent Campus, the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District, and the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 34,837 people, 13,945 households, and 9,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 14,845 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 13,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 3.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
