Shadyside is a village located in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles west of Wheeling, West Virginia. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Shadyside was founded in 1817 by William and Mary Ann Shady, who had moved to the area from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as Shady's Side, but the name was eventually shortened to Shadyside. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Shadyside is located at 40°2'25" North, 80°51'25" West (40.040278, -80.856944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Shadyside's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few small industrial parks.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
