Seaman Summary

Seaman is a small village located in Adams County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles east of Cincinnati. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Seaman was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “New Germany” and was later renamed Seaman in 1845 after a local landowner, John Seaman. The village was incorporated in 1848.
In the late 1800s, Seaman was a thriving river port town. The Ohio River was a major transportation route for goods and people, and Seaman was a popular stop for steamboats. The village was also home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 1900s, the Ohio River began to decline in importance as a transportation route, and Seaman’s economy shifted to agriculture. The village was home to several dairy farms, as well as a few small businesses.

Geography

Seaman is located at 39°25′N 83°45′W (39.4167, -83.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Today, Seaman’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several dairy farms, as well as a few small businesses. The village also has a few restaurants and a few small shops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 785.0 per square mile (303.3/km2).
