Rutland Summary

Rutland, Ohio is a small village located in the southeastern corner of Meigs County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles south of Athens and 30 miles east of Parkersburg, West Virginia. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and covers an area of 0.6 square miles.

History

Rutland was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Rutland, Vermont. The village was named after the settlers’ hometown and was originally known as “Rutlandville.” The first post office was established in 1820 and the village was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the early days, Rutland was a bustling river port and a major stop on the Underground Railroad. The village was also home to a number of industries, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a tannery, and a distillery.

Geography

Rutland is located in the Appalachian Plateau region of Ohio. The village is situated on the banks of the Ohio River and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.

Economy

Rutland’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a number of bed and breakfasts and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation.
