Portage Summary

Portage is a city located in Portage County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Cuyahoga River in the northeastern part of the state. The population was estimated to be 34,837 in 2019.

History

The area that is now Portage was first settled in 1798 by John and Mary Miller, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Miller's Portage, named after the Miller family. The name was changed to Portage in 1808.
The city was officially incorporated in 1833. During the 19th century, Portage was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many runaway slaves passing through the city on their way to freedom.
In the early 20th century, Portage was a major industrial center, with several steel mills and other factories located in the city. The city was also home to the Portage Country Club, which was founded in 1910.

Geography

Portage is located at 41°10'N 81°17'W (41.17, -81.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The city is located in the northeastern part of Ohio, along the Cuyahoga River. It is bordered by the cities of Ravenna to the north, Kent to the east, and Akron to the south.

Economy

Portage is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Portage County government, the Portage County Board of Education, and the Portage County Health Department.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Portage Plastics Corporation, the Portage Metal Products Company, and the Portage Machine Company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 34,837 people, 14,845 households, and 8,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,154.3 people per square mile (831.2/km2). There were 16,093 housing units at an average density of 990.3 per square mile (382.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 14,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.95.
