Polk Summary

Polk, Ohio is a small village located in the southeastern corner of Holmes County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Killbuck Creek, a tributary of the Walhonding River. History

The area that is now Polk was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as “Polk’s Settlement” and was named after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The village was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the early days, the village was a farming community and the main crops were wheat, corn, and oats. The village also had a sawmill, gristmill, and a woolen mill. The village was also home to a number of small businesses, including a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the late 19th century, the village began to grow and the population increased. The village was home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the United Brethren Church, and the Church of Christ. The village also had a school, a post office, and a bank.
In the early 20th century, the village continued to grow and the population reached its peak in 1920 when it was home to 1,072 people. The village was home to a number of businesses, including a furniture store, a grocery store, a hardware store, and a drug store.
