Philo Summary

Philo is a village located in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Zanesville, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Philo was first settled in 1802 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as "Mingo Bottom" and was later renamed "Philo" in 1817 after Philo Beecher, a prominent local resident. The village was incorporated in 1833.
In the 19th century, Philo was a major center for the production of pottery and glassware. The village was home to several pottery and glass factories, including the Philo Pottery Company, which was founded in 1845 and operated until the early 20th century.
