Paulding is a village located in Paulding County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,722 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Paulding County.

History

Paulding was founded in 1839 by John Paulding, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Pauldingville, but the name was changed to Paulding in 1845. The village was incorporated in 1854.
Paulding was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The village was home to several abolitionists, including the Rev. John Rankin, who helped many slaves escape to freedom.

Geography

Paulding is located at 41°7′17″N 84°35′17″W (41.121400, -84.588200). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Paulding is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several factories, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The village also has several retail stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,722 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,845.4 people per square mile (1,101.2/km2). There were 1,637 housing units at an average density of 1,241.2 per square mile (478.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
