New Vienna Summary

New Vienna is a village located in Clinton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

New Vienna was founded in 1817 by a group of German immigrants led by John Jacob Scholl. The village was originally known as Scholl’s Settlement, but was later renamed New Vienna in 1820. The name was chosen to honor the city of Vienna, Austria, which was the hometown of many of the settlers.
The village was incorporated in 1837 and has remained a small, rural community ever since. The village was home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

Geography

New Vienna is located at 39°25'17" North, 83°45'45" West (39.4214, -83.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

New Vienna’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a beef farm, and a poultry farm. The village also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,068 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,744.7 people per square mile (672.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (294.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
