New Riegel Summary

New Riegel is a small village located in Seneca County, Ohio, United States. The village is situated along the Sandusky River, approximately 8 miles south of Tiffin. The population of New Riegel was 517 at the 2010 census.

History

New Riegel was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had previously settled in the area. The village was named after the German city of Riegel, which is located in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg. The village was originally known as Riegel, but the name was changed to New Riegel in 1868 to avoid confusion with another village in the area.
The village was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The village was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel. The village also had a post office, which was established in 1856.

Geography

New Riegel is located at 40°37'45" North, 83°10'45" West (40.629, -83.179). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.
