Miamisburg Summary

Miamisburg is a city located in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The population was 20,181 at the 2010 census.

History

Miamisburg was founded in 1818 by Jonathan Wright, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after the Miami Indians who once lived in the area. The first post office was established in 1820. The town was incorporated in 1827.
In the early 19th century, Miamisburg was a major center for the production of pottery. The town was home to several pottery factories, including the Miamisburg Pottery Company, which was founded in 1845. The pottery industry declined in the late 19th century, but the town remained an important manufacturing center.

Geography

Miamisburg is located at 39°39'25" North, 84°17'17" West (39.656944, -84.288333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Miamisburg is home to several major employers, including the Mound Business Park, which is home to several technology and research companies. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Miamisburg Manufacturing Company, which produces automotive parts.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 20,181 people, 8,072 households, and 5,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,456.3 people per square mile (948.7/km2). There were 8,837 housing units at an average density of 1,077.3 per square mile (416.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $38,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
