Leesburg Summary

Leesburg is a village located in Highland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Highland County.

History

Leesburg was founded in 1805 by William Lee, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Leesburgh, but the name was changed to Leesburg in 1817. The village was incorporated in 1837.
The village was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863, known as the Battle of Leesburg. The battle was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Union victory.

Geography

Leesburg is located at 39°14'25" North, 83°45'45" West (39.240278, -83.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Leesburg is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 717 households, and 441 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 658.3 per square mile (254.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
