Laurelville Summary

Laurelville is a village located in Hocking County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Logan, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Laurelville was founded in 1817 by John and Mary Moore, who named it after the laurel trees that grew in the area. The village was incorporated in 1837.

Geography

Laurelville is located at 39°30′17″N 82°37′45″W (39.504722, -82.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.2 people per square mile (701.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 776.2 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,000. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.

The village is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Hocking Hills State Park, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, and the Hocking Valley Canoe Livery. The village is also home to the annual Hocking Hills Music Festival, which features a variety of musical acts from around the region.
Laurelville is also home to a number of churches, including the Laurelville United Methodist Church, the Laurelville Church of Christ, and the Laurelville Church of the Nazarene.
