Ironton was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, a civil engineer and surveyor. Campbell named the city after the iron ore deposits in the area. The city was incorporated in 1851.
Ironton was an important center of the iron and steel industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to several large iron and steel mills, including the Ironton Iron Works, which was the largest in the world at the time. There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
