Huron Summary
Huron, Ohio is a city located in Erie County, Ohio, United States. It is situated on the shores of Lake Erie, and is part of the Sandusky, Ohio metropolitan statistical area. The population was 6,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Huron was founded in 1809 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was named after the Huron Indians, who were native to the area. The first settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of fish and game in the area. The town was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Huron became a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Lake Erie. The town was home to several resorts, including the Huron Beach Hotel, which was built in 1891. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1912.
In the early 20th century, Huron became a popular summer destination for wealthy families from Cleveland and other nearby cities. The town was home to several large estates, including the Huron Pointe Estate, which was built in 1910.

Huron is located at 41°22′N 82°37′W (41.3667, -82.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

The economy of Huron is largely based on tourism and fishing. The city is home to several marinas, which provide access to Lake Erie. The city is also home to several restaurants, bars, and shops.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,845 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.7 people per square mile (641.3/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 754.3 per square mile (291.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
