Hopedale Summary
Hopedale is a village located in Harrison County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 20 miles south of Steubenville. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Hopedale was founded in 1817 by a group of Quakers from North Carolina. The village was named after the Hopedale Meeting House, which was built in 1818. The village was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Hopedale was a major center for coal mining and steel production. The village was home to several steel mills, including the Hopedale Steel Company, which was founded in 1883. The steel mills provided employment for many of the village's residents.
Geography
Hopedale is located at 40°25'25"N 80°59'45"W (40.423750, -80.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
