Holgate Summary

Holgate is a village located in Henry County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Holgate was founded in 1854 by John Holgate, a German immigrant. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was originally called Holgateville, but the name was changed to Holgate in 1868.
The village was incorporated in 1876 and has remained a small, rural community ever since. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.

Geography

Holgate is located at 41°19'25" North, 84°17'45" West (41.323750, -84.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
