Hicksville Summary

Hicksville is a village located in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Defiance County.

History

Hicksville was founded in 1837 by John Hicks, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. Hicks had purchased the land from the government in 1835 and laid out the town in 1837. The town was named after him. Hicksville was incorporated as a village in 1841.
The village was an important stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was completed in 1843. The canal provided a transportation route for goods and people between Toledo and Fort Wayne, Indiana. The canal was a major factor in the growth of Hicksville.
